In Early Years, at first we look at voice sounds, body sounds and sounds in the environment with the aim of developing listening skills. The children have the opportunuty to explore a variety of tuned and un-tuned instruments during their self-initiated activities both indoors and outdoors. We investigate musical patterns and the understanding of the steady beat, for example, playing percussion instruments whilst singing a variety of songs. We also aim for the children to have an appreciation of a variety of different styles of music including classical, folk and music from other cultures. Giving the children opportunity to move to and interpret the music.
In Years 1 and 2, the children have the opportunity to use their voices in different ways learning a variety of songs based on various themes. They too have the opportunity to use a variety of tuned and un-tuned musical instruments, exploring simple rhythmic and melodic patterns. The Hants music service come in to work with Year 2 children and parents are invited in to listen to their performance, for example, using the African drums.
In Years 3 to 6, the children continue to learn a variety of songs with the focus of singing in tune and with a sense of control. Ms Smith holds a choir each Tuesday after school, the children have the opportunity to perform at different venues, for example, the Christmas performance at the barracks. The children have the opportunity to explore a variety of musical instruments including instruments from other cultures.
